The Salvation Army Bellingham Corps receives $50,000 grant from Dolly Parton for Hope Market food pantry
The donation from the international superstar and philanthropist helped 4,750 Whatcom County residents free groceries during the holidays
Yakima, WA – Oct. 16, 2024 – The Salvation Army has announced its plans to expand in Yakima with the opening of a new Yakima Corps Community Center and client-choice food pantry named The Salvation Army Hope Market at the former Champion Center property at 509 N. 4th Street.
The property encompasses three structures. The primary 33,000 square-foot facility will house adult, adaptive, senior and youth programs, including gym activities, after-school care, meal programs, job training and church services. The annex building will be renovated into The Salvation Army Hope Market and include Pathway of Hope wraparound social services.
Anticipated move-in is sometime in 2025, pending construction renovation and the sale of The Salvation Army’s Yakima Family Services office and thrift store and current Yakima Corps Community Center.
The Salvation Army Yakima thrift store will close on November 15. The Family Services office and Community Center will remain open and continue to support those in need with food, utility assistance, case management, clothing and household items.
“We are bursting at the seams. Our new location in Yakima will be more accessible and convenient for the diverse clients we serve,” said The Salvation Army Yakima Valley Envoy Lisa Sargent. “We aim to serve as a one-stop shop where people can receive the physical, emotional and spiritual support they need. Our goal is to reduce barriers and bring multiple nonprofit service providers under one roof.”
The Salvation Army seeks the community’s support to help raise $2.5 million for renovation of the annex building to establish The Salvation Hope Market, which will remain open until 6:00 p.m. to accommodate families working during the day. Monetary donations can be made online at Yakima.SalvationArmy.org or by calling 509-453-3721.
“The Salvation Army is very thankful for the Yakima Valley community’s tireless support for 130 years,” said Sargent. “Together, we have helped thousands of families in their time of greatest need – thank you!”
In 2023, The Salvation Army Yakima Corps assisted 43,725 people, including food for 90 families per day through its Hope Market food pantry and 775 local high school students each month through in-school food pantries. During the holidays, more than 9,100 toys and 1,000 food boxes were distributed to families in need. THE DEEPER MEANING BEHIND NATIONAL DONUT DAY
This food-focused holiday is among the few with roots in charitable service
Seattle, WA (June 2, 2022) — On the first Friday in June, Americans celebrate all the gooey goodness of donuts. But many don’t know that National Donut Day actually has its roots in doing good. This sweet tradition dates back to World War I, when nearly 250 Salvation Army women volunteers called “Donut Lassies” traveled to France and set up near the front lines where they could give the soldiers clothes, supplies and, of course, DONUTS.
These brave young women fried donuts in small pans and are credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when troops returned home from war. The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the first National Donut Day in 1938 to help those in need during the Great Depression and to commemorate the work of the volunteers.
“This National Donut Day, as we celebrate with a sweet treat, we are proud to remember that this fun tradition started with our very own volunteers over a hundred years ago,” said Colonel Cindy Foley, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army’s Northwest Division. “Donuts represent our long history of providing hope and comfort – from our volunteers in the trenches of war to our continued service on the front lines of need. Knowing that the day has its roots in the ‘fight for good’ makes these treats taste even sweeter.”
The Salvation Army Northwest team plans to do a couple of donut drop-offs in the Seattle area as a token of appreciation for our first responders. Members of the media are invited to come take photos and help us celebrate our first responders. Please let us know if you would like to speak with Salvation Army officer, Major Jonathan Harvey, about the history of Donut Day.

Salvation Army Donors Provide New Back-to-School Clothing for Students
across western Washington
Old Navy stores help make it possible with their fun fashions at incredible value and safe retail shopping in-stores
(Seattle, WA) – 350 low-income youth will receive new clothing as part of The Salvation Army’s back-to-school program. Thanks to generous Salvation Army donors, students from across western Washington from Bellingham to Vancouver will each receive about $100 worth of new clothes for the school year.
The participating students were selected by The Salvation Army, using State and Federal guidelines to assess need. All students are grades K – 12, and most participate in their schools’ free or reduced lunch program.
Volunteers will participate as chaperones giving each child one-on-one shopping help. All participants will follow health and safety requirements. To further stretch the donors’ donations, Old Navy is giving an additional 20 percent discount off the lowest prices.
“For years, Old Navy has been the go-to destination for families’ back-to-school shopping, as our fashions are always focused on fun with clothes that are stylish, functionable and above all, comfortable,” said Eric Larsen, Regional Director for Old Navy. “We know that growing kids need new clothes every school year, and while class may look a little different, Old Navy is thrilled to help outfit and inspire confidence for kids this fall.”
The back-to-school clothing campaign is a collaboration of Salvation Army locations across western Washington. “We’ve seen so many more families coming to The Salvation Army for assistance,” said Lt. Colonel Cindy Foley, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army in the Northwest. “With families losing jobs, or having reduced work hours, budgets are tighter than usual. Clothing and shoes are still needed but are not necessarily an option for these families.”
The project is funded by Salvation Army donors. “We are grateful to the community for the generous support of these students,” said Lt. Colonel Cindy Foley. “Donations of all sizes make this event possible. From $10 and $20 gifts to larger donations, it all adds up to help local families during this time.” Donations are still accepted at https://salarmy.us/backtoschoolshopping
